New Artistic Director for the Budleigh Music Festival appointed

The Trustees of the Budleigh Music Festival are delighted to announce the appointment of their new Artistic Director, Jason Thornton, to succeed Nicky Marshall who retires at the end of the 2019 Festival. Jason will join the Festival team in January 2019 when he will begin to plan the programme for the 2020 Festival. We are also very pleased to say that Nicky will continue to Direct the Festival Orchestra for the foreseeable future.

Jason Thornton is now in his 18th season as Music Director of Bath Philharmonia. In this role he has overseen the development of the orchestra into one of the most highly regarded professional ensembles in the South West. He has also guest conducted numerous other orchestra and choirs in the UK and internationally. In recent seasons he has collaborated with many international soloists including Sheku Kanneh Mason, Jess Gillam, Nicola Benedetti, Tasmin Little, Peter Donohoe, Stephen Hough, Sir Willard White and Renee Fleming. He also has a passion for working with Youth Orchestras including regular guest appearances with the National Schools Symphony Orchestra, Somerset Youth Orchestra and the Bristol Schools Symphony Orchestra.

Jason is also a highly regarded Music Leader specialising in working with hard to reach young people, most notably working with Young Carers across the South West and further afield. In this role he has led projects for the Bath Festival, Salisbury Festival, Greenbelt Festival, Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra, and many Music Hubs, schools, colleges and universities. From 2009-2016 he led Music in Action, the Community Music course at Bath Spa University.

Jason has also had a successful career as a producer, being the classical programmer at the Frome Festival since 2003, director of the Holburne Museums International Concert Series from 2011-2015 and classical programmer at The Exchange, Sturminster Newton.
